ABOUT OUR KENNEL:

Highwood Kennel is located in both Calgary and Edmonton Alberta.

We strive to produce show and companion American Staffordshire Terriers and Wirehaired Dachshunds that adhere strictly to breed type, with a focus on fantastic temperaments and correct structure as outlined in the written CKC, AKC, and UKC breed standards.

Amstaffs: We have a fond affection for the look and type of many of the Amstaff kennels from the 80's and 90's, and tend to breed back to those lines to produce dogs of that type, while improving each generation. In thinking about what the American Pit Bull Terrier / Amstaff was bred to do, we feel they should possess a strong, well-muscled rear. A large, blocky, chiseled head with pronounced cheek muscles and the correct eye shape.

A wide, full, muscled fore chest and a deep chest that falls below the elbow coupled with strong shoulders with obvious muscle and tone. We like our males 20.5 inches or less at the withers, and our females 19.5 inches or less.

Our breeding partner is based in Santa Rosa California under the kennel prefix Ironstone, all of our dogs have the recommended OFA health and DNA testing completed before breeding.

Wirehaired Dachshunds: Come in both standard and mini size. Both are lively, charismatic, and a blast to live with. We strive to produce Dachshunds that have a proper harsh wire coat, level toplines, nice head piece, and correct length of ribbing and keel. The front assembly is the hallmark of the breed and one of the hardest things to get right, and keep - and the easiest structure to lose. In thinking of what the Dachshund was originally bred to do - dig out and hunt small prey, we also strive to get the front assembly correct and keep a little of that hunting drive. Our foundation Dachshunds were imported from Romania and Russia and are CKC Champions or Grand Champions in the show ring. We do full DNA panels on all of our breeding dogs, as well as test for PRA, Lafora Disease, Thyroid and Cardiac.
